Fruitful Commons
Project Overview
The Festival Beach Food Forest is an edible forest garden where visitors can openly forage and enjoy fresh food on the shores of Lady Bird Lake.
Festival Beach Community Garden is made up of 80 dedicated gardeners and many other volunteers who have come together to build a community in the garden with the goal of improving the food security, health, and happiness of the residents of our East Cesar Chavez and Holly neighborhoods. The garden provides the local gardeners and their families with a reliable source of fresh and affordable food and has become a site of cooperation, collaboration, celebration, and developing friendships between diverse neighbors.
FBCG is a vibrant and beautiful space that serves as a habitat for diversity in addition to providing food for regular donations of produce to nearby food pantries.
The Fruitful Commons project aims to conduct a comprehensive topographical survey of the Festival Beach Food Forest and Community Garden to support its growth and help plan for future developments, including an outdoor harvest hub and kitchen. In partnership with a University of Texas senior design course, the project will also perform a detailed drainage study to investigate options for reintroducing gravity irrigation or filling a cistern for manual watering, while exploring innovative drainage solutions that could serve as models for climate crisis mitigation throughout the city.
