Biharu, Tanzania

The community of Biharu, Buhigwe District, Kigoma Region of Tanzania currently drinks untreated water from a nearby river. The local community of 12,000+ people uses a 20 year old water distribution system that is in disrepair and was originally designed to serve 3,000 people. EWB Greater Austin has been working since December 2019 to plan, design, and build a system that will adequately serve Biharu and its rapidly growing population for years to come. With the COVID-19 pandemic, EWB members have been unable to travel to Tanzania but have remotely conducted water testing, which confirmed the presence of E. coli in the local water supply at both the supply and distribution points.
